The Fasting Blogs are a look into Simon’s recent 40 day fast. It’s not a ‘how to’ guide. Just a look into what happens to the body during a fast and the emotions that accompany what can be a very grueling process. Simon began each week with a 24 hour fast and then starting eliminating items from his diet. The first week he gave up alcohol. During week two, he added dairy products to his ‘elimination list.’ Then he also gave up meat, white sugar, coffee, wheat and finally solid food. During the last week he juiced for three days followed by a full 36 hour fast.

Good morning. Indeed.
I have been fasting for 14 hours so far. 10 to go.
I’ve decided every time I take a step (I’m doing a stepped fast…gradually eliminating) on my fast I will start with a 24 hour water fast.
I am in the inaugural beginning fast.
I am feeling a bit achey from lying in be so long. I need to strengthen my body.
But my sleep was fabulous. Elsie was not up so much and I really slept well.
I think not having food in my system has really enhanced my sleeping.
However, for the first few hours I did experience sweating and major heat.
Urine this morning was light brown.
I’d love to be able to weigh myself and test my ph…
Took a picture of myself using photobooth.
In the last half year I have experienced really dry and itchy skin, redness on my
face—especially after coffee (dehydration I think). White tongue.
Oh and my chin lubby has taken on monstrous proportions.
I seek to reverse all of the above!
My outlook is pretty positive.
My purpose is to use this fasting to improve my health, sleeping, fitness, functioning and to develop strong discipline that can carry me forward in all I do—to show that what I resolve to do I will do. (Rebecca will like this!)
Okay. Now to do some exercises and get ready.

At the lab.
Starting to feel a bit spacey, not too hungry yet.
I can feel fatigue behind my eyes.
It is time to make some green tea. Yes!
I have allowed myself tea and lemon juice for this fast. I want to manage my
caffeine habit with green tea.
On the other hand I do feel pretty lean and responsive to movements…
perhaps it is more immediate. Does that contradict feeling foggy? Not sure. Trying to figure out all of my sensations..
I am on the microscope today. I hope it goes well…under the circumstances.

I fasted from Tues 6:40 pm to Wed 6:40 pm.
This morning I had lemon and hot water, afternoon ginger green tea.
I did not have Immunocal.
I broke my fast with raw veggies in lemon and oil and some hummus.
After I had a cinnamon green tea and banana choco-chip loaf. Not the best choice.
No coffee. Hmmm.
Got home and had rye with goat mozzarella, oatmeal, dark rye with almond butter, yogurt with Immunocal.
Basically I stuffed myself with what I could find.
In the future breaking a fast will require much more planning…re: what to eat next. Especially when I have dropped wheat, sugar, dairy and cooked foods!
Overall though, a good start to a grueling fast.
