Creating Habits

To answer these questions, you need to start by examining your habits. The things you do automatically. The toast you make when you are hungry at night. The coffee you buy in the morning. The “before bed regime” you engage in (or not)—wash, brush, floss! We each have our own individual set of routines which we do automatically. Our bodies and minds are programmed on autopilot much of the time. We simply react–doing and thinking in habitual patterns.

But these norms are not all positive or intentional…anymore. At one point the routines were created and may have served you. Somewhere down the line you had a coffee in the morning and repeated it until it became automatic. Maybe you allowed yourself an extra hour of television during a period of extreme fatigue until it became a normal practice. You need to decide today if your current ways are supporting or hindering your progress as you move toward wellness.

You have the power to choose. You are able to make or break a habit.

But first. Are you conscious of what you do each day? It’s always a good idea to take stock of what you’re actually doing. To look at the rituals in your life and see if they are serving you. Does this activity get me closer to my goals–physically, mentally, spiritually, relationally?

Remember your health journey is the sum of your daily habits and they can be changed. All you need is a little intentionality and a lot of will!
